A part of the Greater Toronto Area, the Regional Municipality of Halton comprises the city of Burlington and the towns of Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills. Burlington and Oakville occupy a continuous 25 kilometre stretch along the north shore of Lake Ontario, while the towns of Milton and Halton Hills are pocketed in the more agricultural interior area to the immediate north
Despite a burgeoning population and urban fabric - Best Planning Estimates predict the region will grow to 628,900 by 2021 from 439,000 in 2006 - Halton is spread over both dense mixed urban land uses and protected greenbelt and agricultural uses, affording a panorama of recreational and commercial opportunities for residents of the Region. Residents enjoy forest ravines, fine dining, verdant scenery, and walkable downtowns. Conjoined by overlapping mass transit systems the Region lies a short trip away via highways and GO Transit from globally-ascendant Toronto.
In line with its population growth, employment is also expected to rise in Halton by 47 per cent, from 52.5 to 54.1 jobs per 100 Region residents. The Region is also home to public, Catholic, and private grade schools in addition to Sheridan College’s Trafalgar campus which offers a number of unique and highly regarded programs. Other post-secondary institutions, such as Humber College and McMaster University, are nearby. There are also several vocational and continuing education schools as well as easily accessible Adult Learning Centres.
Halton Region also claims an enviable status as one of the safest areas in Canada; in a 2006 Maclean’s crime rate ranking it was ranked 97th of 100 areas.
